TA Network Meeting - 27th May 2027

Audience: Support staff, teaching assistants, individual support assistants, higher-level teaching assistants, primary and secondary.

This course will provide:

Teaching assistants make important decisions throughout every lesson. When a pupil is stuck, should you give them more thinking time, repeat the instruction, provide a clue, show them an example, change the task or give them the answer?

This network meeting will draw upon the Education Endowment Foundation’s latest guidance to explore how the support TAs provide can help pupils learn and become more independent. 

Using practical classroom examples, colleagues will explore:

  • How to identify what the pupil is supposed to be learning before offering help.
  • How to begin with the least amount of support needed.
  • When to wait, prompt, provide a clue, model an example or correct an error.
  • How to adapt access to a task without unnecessarily reducing its challenge.
  • How to support pupils who lack confidence without creating reliance on an adult.
  • How to recognise whether support is making a difference.
  • What TAs need from teachers and leaders to support pupils effectively.

The session will provide a practical approach that TAs can use during lessons, alongside opportunities to discuss real situations, share effective practice and identify something to try within their own setting.

Key Aims:

  • To help TAs make confident decisions about when and how to support pupils.
  • To explore how support can keep pupils thinking rather than completing the thinking for them.
  • To use a practical sequence of waiting, prompting, clueing, modelling and correcting.
  • To consider how pupils can become more confident and less reliant on adult support.
  • To recognise whether an adaptation is helping the pupil access the learning or removing too much of the challenge.
  • To share expertise and effective practice from across the network.
